Saving infected teeth with root canal

Root Canal

What Is A Root Canal?

A Root Canal; also known as endodontic treatment, is the process of removing injured, infected, or dead nerves (pulp) from your tooth.

When Do You Need A Root Canal?

Deep cavities, and cracks in fillings can allow germs (bacteria) to enter the tooth. If the germs enter the pulp, it becomes infected and needs to be removed. At this point, it may be symptomatic / painful to the patient. An infected tooth will never heal on its own. If left untreated, the infection can spread and cause serious oral health problems, which might require emergency oral surgery.

Things You Should Know

You may be wondering: does a root canal hurt? You can be assured that getting a root canal is a predictable and painless way to save a tooth. Dr. Gosain will first freeze the tooth affected to make your treatment more comfortable. The damaged pulp needs to be accessed, and so an opening is made in the tooth. Dr. Gosain will remove the pulp using very intricate tools, and clean the root canal system. Once this is done, the canal is filled and sealed.A post may be placed in the root to strengthen the tooth structure. The tooth is then filled with a permanent filling. Dr. Gosain may recommend a crown as well, to withstand the biting forces and prevent (tooth fracture or loss in future).
